Shhh!!! This is my Favourite Part…

shhmyfavouritIf you don’t have one, you need one. At least one. If not a few, you know for special occasions; waking up, driving to work, road-tripping, wine-sipping, skinny dipping, cooking, cleaning, bathing, preening  and everything else you get up to in life.

You don’t have any idea what I’m talking about do you? I could be talking about pairs of shoes, but I’m not. I know, I’m straying from my usual bubbly-without-brains banter. What I’m talking about in this case my darlings, is music; playlists, albums, or, if you’re an 80’s child, mixed-tapes.

Today I share with you some of my favourite lines from some of my favourite songs. I’ll give you the line, you give me the song or artist.

1) Don’t let yourself fall. Don’t let yourself stumble. If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime…

2) And it ain’t that I’m wiser, it’s only that I’ve spent more time with my back to the wall…

3) You came to me this morning and you handled me like meat. You’d have to be a man to know how good that feels, how sweet…

4) Another Saturday another date. She would be ready but she’d always make him wait in the hallway in anticipation…

5) Oh it’s hard to be a boy when all the men have lost their joy and they can’t find the ones they’ve left behind…

6) Take the ribbon from your hair. Shake it loose and let it fall, laying soft against your skin like the shadows on the wall…

7) Drive in. You guzzle gin, commit a little mortal sin. It’s good for the soul…

8) When you’re loving somebody, baby, you’re taking a gamble against some sorrow. But who knows, baby, ‘Cause we may not be here tomorrow…

9) No, there’s nothin’ you can send me, my own true love.  There’s nothin’ I wish to be ownin’.  Just carry yourself back to me unspoiled from across that lonesome ocean…

10) Nothing could be sadder than a glass of wine alone.  Loneliness loneliness, is just a waste of  time,  But you don’t ever  have to walk alone…

This may have left you with a song in your head, or maybe a bit annoyed that we don’t share the same taste in music. Whatever else, I hope  it reminded you that music can change your mood, and can speak to your heart when words are inadequate.

Old Flames of Christmas Past

During the holidays, couples look cozier, happier, and like the enduring icons of Hallmark holidays.

Whether single or cuffed up for the season, it’s rare the adult who does not reflect on Christmas’s past and the loves of our life who have become unforgettable.

This post is for anyone feeling nostalgic for friendships and/or lovers of the past.  Perhaps you’re even flirting with re-igniting an old flame?

I have been fortunate enough to have loved men who offered me deep and enduring friendship, sincere understanding, have bared the vulnerability of the soul, and the silliness of the human spirit.

In the quiet hours I think of you; when the flames of the fire are dying and the tree lights are the only thing that break the dark silence of a home tucked in for the night.

Is my tall dark and handsome friend someone who will stick around for a while? Become an even more, dear friend? Maybe even one of those rare lovers who stand the test of time, and soothe my soul? Is one of my very best friends someone I will wonder, ‘what if’ about? Time will tell…

For the ladies and gentlemen out there tonight who have loved, lost, and found the courage to love again….

Remember the Prom?

Today I was listening to one of my favourite radio programs on my long, construction-jammed drive to work, and they were playing songs from the movie 16 Candles. It got me thinking about all the wonderful emotions we leave behind as our youthful innocence slips away.

Do you remember…

1) Slow dancing at high school dances.

2) How you felt the split second before a first kiss

3) Doing your best friend’s hair before a double date

4) Staying up all night whispering into the phone

5) Being asked to Prom.

6) Dreaming about who you’d be at 20, 30 and 40

7) Trying new eye make-up

8) Reading a love note from your high school sweetheart

9) Your first pair of high heels

10) Believing you could have it all

The Dimming of the Day

Sometimes all we have are our memories to keep us warm and hopeful.

….listening to this song, I remember a beautiful summer evening in the front row of a Richard Thompson concert, snugged up in a silk shawl, and cuddled beside one of the past loves of my life. It was a surprise gift following a weekend in the great outdoors. What a great memory to be blessed with…

I hope you enjoy this song at the dimming of Tuesday….
